The Henry George School of San Francisco was founded in 1950 as a 501- c3 educational non profit organization.
Its purpose is to provide inexpensive public education in the field of economic social philosophy.
The school is named for the 19th century American social philosopher and economist Henry George. George's great work, Progress & Poverty, argues that most social and economic breakdowns can be traced back to property right in land customs. Where gifts of nature (Land) are treated as a commonwealth, society flows along with comparatively few social outrages and inequities. On the other hand, George argued, the privatization of the economic value of land led to depressed wages, economic recessions and depressions, and that the resulting poverty exacerbated anti-social behavior.
